Psychological Dynamics of Students Who Prioritize Gaming Over Academic Assignments from a Self-Determination Theory Perspective

Abstract

Fenomena mahasiswa yang mengutamakan game di atas tugas kuliah sering dipandang sebagai bentuk kemalasan tanpa menelusuri dinamika psikologis yang melatarbelakanginya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pola perilaku mahasiswa gamer, menganalisis bagaimana lingkungan game memfasilitasi kebutuhan otonomi, kompetensi, dan keterhubungan, menganalisis kondisi pemenuhan kebutuhan tersebut dalam lingkungan akademik, serta menjelaskan dampak psikologis terhadap motivasi akademik mahasiswa. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik wawancara mendalam terhadap empat mahasiswa aktif UIN Siber Syekh Nurjati Cirebon yang dipilih secara purposif berdasarkan variasi intensitas bermain, yaitu gamer ringan, gamer sedang, gamer intensif, dan mantan gamer intensif. Analisis data mengacu pada model Miles dan Huberman dengan triangulasi sumber untuk menjaga keabsahan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa intensitas bermain game berbanding lurus dengan tingkat prokrastinasi dan penurunan motivasi akademik, lingkungan game memfasilitasi ketiga kebutuhan psikologis dasar secara langsung melalui kebebasan strategi, umpan balik instan, dan komunitas sosial yang kuat, sementara lingkungan akademik belum secara konsisten memenuhi kebutuhan tersebut sehingga game menjadi substitusi psikologis yang lebih memuaskan. Penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam memperluas pemahaman bahwa penanganan fenomena mahasiswa gamer membutuhkan pendekatan berbasis pemenuhan kebutuhan psikologis, bukan sekadar pembatasan akses terhadap game.
